HUSKY dental coverage is two different programs wearing one name. Children get one of the most complete dental benefits in the country. Adults get real coverage too, but with a $1,000 yearly cap and once-a-year rules that catch people off guard, usually at the front desk of a dental office. We’re a HUSKY network provider at all ten of our Connecticut offices, so here is the version we explain to patients every day.
First, which HUSKY do you have?
It’s printed on your card. HUSKY A is Medicaid for children, parents and pregnant women. HUSKY B is the Children’s Health Insurance Program for kids in families above the Medicaid income line. HUSKY C is Medicaid for people who are 65 or older, blind or disabled. HUSKY D is Medicaid for adults without dependent children. Covered CT is a separate program for adults 19 to 64 that uses the same dental benefit. All of them get dental through the Connecticut Dental Health Partnership (CTDHP), and all of them are accepted at Dr. Dental.
Children under 21
If your child is on HUSKY A, C or D, dental care at a network dentist costs you nothing. Covered:
- Checkups twice a year and up to four problem-focused exams
- Cleanings and fluoride every six months
- Sealants on molars (once every five years per tooth)
- X-rays: bitewings yearly, a full set every three years
- Fillings (once every two years per tooth surface)
- Crowns, once every five years, with prior approval
- Root canals and retreatments, with prior approval
- Extractions, including wisdom teeth, with prior approval
- Space maintainers when a baby tooth is lost early
- Braces, when CTDHP approves them as medically necessary
- Night guards for serious grinding, and one athletic mouth guard for a school sport, with prior approval
- Sedation or general anesthesia for children under 9, or older children with conditions like autism, with prior approval
The braces question comes up constantly. “Medically necessary” means a significant bite problem, not crowding that bothers a teenager. Our orthodontists photograph and measure the bite, submit it to CTDHP, and CTDHP decides. If it’s denied, we’ll tell you what braces would cost on a monthly plan instead.
Adults 21 and older
Adults on HUSKY A, C and D, and Covered CT members 21 to 64, are covered for:
- One periodic exam per calendar year, plus up to four problem-focused exams
- One cleaning per calendar year
- Bitewing x-rays once a year, a full set every three years
- Fillings, once every two years per tooth surface
- Crowns, once every five years, with prior approval
- Root canals, once per tooth, with prior approval
- Extractions, including wisdom teeth, with prior approval for surgical cases
- Gum treatment, with prior approval
- Full and partial dentures, once every seven years, with prior approval, plus repairs and relines
- Night guards when medically necessary, with prior approval
Not covered for adults: a second cleaning in the same year, braces, bridges, implants, and implant-supported dentures.
The $1,000 limit
Here’s the rule that matters most. HUSKY pays up to $1,000 per calendar year for an adult’s dental care, across every dentist you see. Cleanings, exams, x-rays, fillings, crowns and dentures all count toward it. Emergency visits and hospital dental care don’t. The counter resets on January 1, and whatever you didn’t use is gone.
Two exceptions keep the limit from being a wall. Treatment that CTDHP approves in advance as medically necessary can go over $1,000, and that includes complete dentures. And a partial denture to replace a lost front tooth is covered even though cosmetic work generally isn’t.
In practice: a cleaning, exam and x-rays use a few hundred dollars at HUSKY’s fee schedule. Add a filling or two and you’re still well inside the limit. It’s the year with a root canal and a crown, or a set of dentures, where planning helps. We check how much of your $1,000 is left before scheduling major work, and if something can safely wait until January, we’ll say so. If it can’t, we submit for prior approval and let CTDHP decide whether it goes above the limit. Nothing gets billed to you without a written estimate and your okay.
What prior approval means for your appointment
Crowns, root canals, gum treatment, dentures, surgical extractions and braces all need CTDHP’s approval before we do them. We handle the paperwork: x-rays, photos and the request go to CTDHP, and most decisions come back within a few weeks. We book the treatment once it’s approved. If you come in with a toothache, the exam and any emergency care happen the same day; the approval process is for the follow-up work.
Common questions
Does HUSKY cover two cleanings a year?
For children under 21, yes, one every six months. For adults, one cleaning per calendar year.
Is there a limit on HUSKY dental for adults?
Yes, $1,000 per calendar year, counted across all dentists. Emergency care doesn’t count, and CTDHP can approve medically necessary treatment above the limit.
Does HUSKY cover braces for adults?
No. For children under 21, braces are covered when approved as medically necessary. Adults can get braces or Invisalign at our offices with an orthodontist from $137 a month.
Does HUSKY cover dentures?
Yes, with prior approval, once every seven years, for both children and adults. Complete dentures approved by CTDHP can exceed the adult $1,000 limit.
Does HUSKY cover implants?
No. Bridges and implants are not covered benefits for adults, and only in rare medically necessary cases for children.
