Medical Security Plan. Administered by MassHealth, this insurance plan offers a wide range of dental service and insurance coverage for any child in Massachusetts under the age of 19.

Formerly known as Unicare dental insurance, the Children’s Medical Security Plan is regarded as one of the most effective “safety nets” in Massachusetts to ensure all resident children get the proper dental care they need.

The Children’s Medical Security Plan – Dental Benefits

The Children’s Medical Security Plan’s dental benefits originally started as Unicare Dental. Due to administrative changes and updates to Massachusetts legislative processes, Unicare Dental Insurance became the Children’s Medical Security insurance plan.

The insurance program is administered by Unicare Life and Health Insurance Company, and is one of the largest public-funded dental insurance initiatives in Massachusetts.

Some of the helpful benefits provided by the Children’s Medical Security Plan’s dental program include:

• Affordable copays. Dental services only cost up to $6 for a copay, depending on the type of service.
• Cosmetic and surgical dentistry. The plan covers “major” dental work, not just minor cleanings and other procedures. This service is continued from Unicare dental benefits.
• Flexible premium charges. Dental care is covered based on family income, based on federal poverty guidelines.

Here’s the bottom line with the coverage: all children in MA are covered by the Children’s Medical Security Plan’s dental insurance guidelines. Benefits are calculated on a fiscal year schedule (July 1st through June 30th), so you’ll want to check the main MassHealth web portal for any yearly adjustments.
