Updated October 2026
If you have Assurant dental insurance, your plan is now a Sun Life plan. Assurant sold its U.S. employee benefits business, dental included, to Sun Life, and the sale closed on March 1, 2016. Dr. Dental accepts Sun Life dental plans, including ones that started out as Assurant dental, at all 30 of our offices in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Call your office to confirm your plan before the first visit.

What happened to Assurant dental
Sun Life announced the purchase of Assurant’s U.S. employee benefits business on September 9, 2015, and completed it on March 1, 2016. The deal covered Assurant’s dental business and its dentist network, plus life, disability and vision products. Sun Life said it would bring the businesses together under the Sun Life brand.
A plan you once knew as Assurant dental is run by Sun Life today. The Massachusetts Division of Insurance list of insured dental plans for 2026 shows Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada offering group dental coverage. Assurant isn’t on that list.
Where you might still see the Assurant name
Sun Life’s find-a-dentist tool still has an option called the Assurant Dental Network. Sun Life tells members to choose it if their dental ID card lists DHA or DHA Premier. DHA is Dental Health Alliance, which contracts with dentists for Sun Life’s networks. Other companies use the DHA network too, so check the insurer name printed on your card.
If you still have an old Assurant card
- Coverage through your job. Ask your HR or benefits office whether your dental plan is still with Sun Life and for a newer ID card.
- A card from a job you’ve left. The plan may no longer be active. Check with the employer or with Sun Life before your visit.
- Not sure which network you’re in. Sun Life lets members sign in to their account to see their network. If the online tools don’t help, Sun Life’s line for help finding a dentist is 1-800-442-7742.
For questions about your deductible or what’s left of your yearly maximum, call the member number on your current card.
How Sun Life dental plans usually work
Your employer picks the plan design, so benefits vary. Old Assurant guides that list fixed plan levels and dollar amounts don’t describe your plan today. Your own benefit summary does.
Sun Life offers PPO plans and prepaid plans. Across PPO plans in general, preventive visits are typically covered in full, fillings at around 80% and crowns and other major work at around 50%, up to a yearly maximum. Your plan may also have a deductible and waiting periods.
Prepaid plans, also called DHMOs, work differently from PPOs. If your card says DHMO or prepaid, call us before you book so we can check whether we can see you under that plan.
Using your Sun Life plan at Dr. Dental
Find your nearest office on our locations page, then call or request an appointment online. Give us your plan name, group number and member ID, and we’ll check your benefits and file the claims. Before any treatment beyond a cleaning, you’ll get a written estimate of what your plan should pay and what you’d owe.
Bring your current dental ID card and a photo ID to the first visit. If the coverage comes through a spouse or parent, bring the plan holder’s name and date of birth. If you’re in pain, our offices hold time for emergency visits, often the same day. See our emergency dentist page.
If your coverage has lapsed, the $57 new patient visit includes a cleaning, exam, x-rays and a written treatment plan if anything needs attention. For one problem tooth, the $25 look-and-see covers an exam, x-rays of that area and a price for the fix. See our specials page and dental costs without insurance. Plan lists by state: Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and New Jersey.
Common questions about Assurant dental insurance
Does Assurant dental insurance still exist?
Not under the Assurant name. Sun Life bought Assurant’s U.S. employee benefits business, including dental, in a deal that closed on March 1, 2016. Plans that were Assurant dental are now Sun Life plans.
Does Dr. Dental accept Assurant dental?
We accept Sun Life dental plans, which is where Assurant dental plans went, at our offices in all four states. Call your office with your group number and member ID before the first visit so we can confirm your specific plan.
My dental card says DHA. Is that Assurant or Sun Life?
Check the insurer name on the card. If it says Sun Life or Assurant, search Sun Life’s find-a-dentist tool under the Assurant Dental Network, which is what Sun Life tells DHA and DHA Premier members to do. If the card names another insurer, call that company.
Will my old Assurant card still work?
Only if the coverage behind it is still active. Ask your employer’s benefits office for current plan details or a newer card, and bring whatever card you have so we can check eligibility.
How do I find a dentist who takes my Sun Life plan?
Use Sun Life’s find-a-dentist tool with your group ID, or sign in to your Sun Life account to see your network. For help, Sun Life’s number is 1-800-442-7742. Any Dr. Dental office can also check your plan.
