Step Under the Mistletoe With These 10 Tips For Fresh Breath

If you find yourself under the mistletoe and ready to pucker up this season, you’ll want to ensure your breath is fresh, right?

When it comes to maintaining the best possible smile, keeping your teeth white shouldn’t be your only concern. Fresh breath is not only important to your oral health, but it can affect your relationships and social life, too. Our East Coast dental experts at Dr. Dental are sharing 10 tips for fresh breath this holiday season.

  1. Brush At Least Twice a Day. Be sure to brush after waking up and before hitting the sheets for sure, but brushing after meals is also encouraged.
  2. Floss Each Day. Keep a container of floss handy. Your nightstand, purse or briefcase and desk can be great spots!
  3. Clean Your Tongue. You can buy tongue scrapers in the oral health aisle of most pharmacies, but scrubbing your tongue with your toothbrush while brushing your teeth should be just fine.
  4. Fuel Up With Water. Plain old H20 is a great way to give your mouth a quick rinse, in addition to keeping your body hydrated. When your mouth gets dry, the bacteria in your mouth just sits around waiting to be rinsed away.
  5. Watch Your Diet. If you are dieting, know that a high protein, low-carb regime may be great for your size, but can cause your body to burn fat instead of sugar, which can cause stinky breath.
  6. Go Green. Green tea and green herbs that is! Both are great for reducing bad breath. Munch on parsley or mint leaves during the day to temporarily freshen breath.
  7. Consume More Vitamin C. Vitamin C is not only great for fighting colds, but it can also reduce the stench of bad breath. Add melons and berries to your daily diet to help.
  8. Gargle With Peroxide. Peroxide can be a great mouthwash! The oxygen in hydrogen peroxide kills mouth bacteria that can cause bad breath.
  9. Chew Sugar-Free Gum. Saliva is what washes away the bacteria in your mouth that causes bad breath. If you have a dry mouth, chewing gum makes you salivate, which can freshen breath.
  10. Visit Your Dentist. Schedule visits with your dentist every six months for a cleaning and oral exam. This will allow early detection of any problems such as cavities and gum disease that can cause bad breath.
