At-Home Dental Care Tips

Your dentists can’t take care of you and your family 24/7. At some point, you have to practice solid dental care habits at home to maintain healthy teeth and gums – the more consistent and disciplined the habits, the better.

Two of the most common questions we receive at Dr. Dental are: What can I do to ensure the best teeth and gum health from home? What are the at-home dental care practices that your dentists use?

Awesome questions! We realize how important this is for individuals and families looking to keep their smiles looking great year-round. Aside from regular dental appointments at your favorite family dental practice, there are some critical home care techniques you can do today to keep those pearly whites whiter than ever!

Healthy Teeth and Gums Start at Home: Practical and Easy At-Home Dental Care

Want to impress your dentist and ensure excellent oral health? Just like everything worthwhile, it takes a bit of effort. A small commitment to oral health pays big dividends down the road.

Some form of tooth decay impacts roughly 90% of the American adult population. That’s one statistic you certainly don’t want to be part of. When so many people are afflicted with tooth decay, it probably makes sense to do whatever they’re NOT doing.

In the case of at-home dental care, not enough people take the time to care for their teeth and gums.

Try these tips and tricks, and you’ll be amazed at how much healthier your mouth looks and feels:

  • Brush regularly. This means at least twice per day. If you’re able to squeeze in a lunchtime brush, that’s even better!
  • Brush the right way. Brushing isn’t just about quantity (the number of times you brush); it’s also about quality. Brush with a gentle, circular motion all over the teeth and along the gum line. This helps remove that pesky plaque that so often leads to tooth decay and gingivitis.
  • Don’t forget to floss. Flossing is the hidden tool in your tooth care toolbox that will really improve your oral health. Use a waxy, smooth floss at least once every day to get to food particles, plaque, and other substances your brush can’t reach.
  • Rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash. A major contributor to tooth decay is bacteria. To minimize the bacteria buildup in your mouth, use an antiseptic mouthwash. Make it a habit to rinse at least every time you floss or brush.
  • Drink more water and watch your diet. Get more H2O into your system – it’s the most mouth-friendly beverage by far. It’s also helpful to cut down on sugar and processed carbohydrates, which can be harmful to teeth.
