Dental Implants

DENTAL IMPLANTS

A dental implant is a type of prosthetic tooth to replace one or more teeth that have been lost as a result of trauma, decay, gum disease or other reason. A dental implant consist of a metal post, usually titanium that is implanted into the jaw. The surface of the tooth implant is almost indistinguishable from the wearer’s normal teeth.

Dental ImplantsBENEFITS OF TEETH IMPLANTS

While dental implants are more expensive than other types of replacement teeth, they are stronger even than natural teeth and can last for 10 to 20 years. Some of the advantages of teeth implants include:

  • Dental implants improve appearance
  • Teeth implants improve speech
  • Tooth implants help to elevate self-esteem
  • A dental implant is convenient
  • A tooth implant makes it eating a lot easier
  • Tooth implants are more comfortable than other dental restorations
  • Better oral health is made easier with a dental implant
  • Unlike dentures and bridges, tooth implants do not need to be removed overnight or for cleaning.

Unlike bridge work, they are self-supporting and do not rely on surrounding teeth for support. Occasionally, lost teeth can cause loss of the underlying jaw bone. Dental implants stop this from happening.

CARING FOR YOUR DENTAL IMPLANTS

Although teeth implants are more robust than other forms of restorative dentistry, in order to provide maximum durability for many years, they require care on the part of the wearer and the dentist. Prior to having a tooth implant, you need to be in good dental health and good general health. It is essential that there is adequate bone to support the tooth implant. After the tooth implant, it is vital to be fully committed to regular, if not increased, visits to the dentist for check-ups and to have teeth cleaned. Increased brushing and flossing are recommended.

ADVICE ON FOOD AND DRINK WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

It is best to avoid hot food and drinks for a while after the implant is in place because the area around the new tooth will be sensitive. For the first few days, a mainly liquid diet is advised. Biting down on hard food too soon is likely to be painful so soft foods like mashed potato and soft fish are recommended. Work your way up slowly to a normal diet.

IS A DENTAL IMPLANT RIGHT FOR YOU?

If you are self-conscious about missing teeth or dentures, are in good health and have healthy gums, then dental implants may be right for you. A dental implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth and can make your life easier and your smile brighter for decades to come.
